New York firefighter interview questions: What is the ‘firefighter’ role?
- by admin
The New York Fire Department’s (NYFD) top brass has taken a stab at a major staffing question: What are firefighters?
The answer to that question could make or break the careers of many of the city’s firefighters, according to an interview with the head of the department’s human resources department.
In an interview on The American Banker radio show, Robert Pattinson spoke with New York City Fire Chief James Pasternak, who is overseeing the hiring of the next batch of firefighters.
Pattinson, a former firefighter and current Fox News contributor, had some harsh words for Pasternaki, whom he says is the wrong guy to fill the role of chief of the fire department.
He also slammed the city of New York’s decision to give the top job to the former chief of NYPD.
Pasternak is one of the first candidates to be interviewed by the New York Department of Fire and Emergency Management (NYDEM) and has a long history of criticism of the NYPD, which he said is one part of a corrupt system in New York.
He said the FDNY needs to look at hiring people who understand the culture and history of the FDN.PATSYSON: I want to start by saying I’ve worked with the police for 30 years.
I’ve been with them, I’ve seen the problems.
I can tell you from my own experience that they have the same problem that I have.
They’re underpaid, underworked, underfunded.
They’re understaffed, under trained.
I’m here to tell you this: if they have to be told to look for the next person, they will do it.
They won’t have the discipline to do that.
They’ll do it with impunity.
They have the money.
They know what they’re doing.
And the only way they’ll learn is by being abused.
So, if they want to change, they’re going to have to hire someone who can be a leader, who understands that.
The way that we were taught in the military was, you’re in charge of yourself, you’ve got to know what’s going on, you have to understand it, you know where you’re going and when you’re doing it.
Now, you get to tell the boss what’s good for you and what’s bad for you, and you know exactly when to go.
The only way that the FD can change is if it hires somebody who can lead.
PASTOR: Do you think that’s going to happen?PATSON: Absolutely.
They’ve done a great job hiring me, and I’m so excited to be here.
But they have a great culture that has been underpaid.
They had the money for this, and the only reason they have it now is because they have an excuse to be underpaid and under trained and under under paid.
They don’t have to have a good culture.
They could go and get someone who’s been in the police.
They already have the police, they have all the police in the city, so why not put them on a board and put the cops in charge?
They have a lot of money and they’ve been understaffing and underfunded for years.
They can do it now.
And if they do that, then I will not complain.PASTOR-HANAN: When will they start hiring people?PATTSON: The FDNY’s not hiring people.
I was just on the phone with the New Jersey State Fire Administration last week, and they said they’re not going to hire any firefighters.
The last time they tried, the governor signed a bill that said they have one job.
Now the last thing they have is a fire department, so they’re gonna have to start from scratch.
I have been here 35 years.
The FDN is the largest in New Jersey.
And I am here to stay.
So I can promise you that they will hire people.
They need to hire people, and now I can assure you that the next time you see me on TV you’re gonna be looking at me as the fire chief.PATSON: But, you can be fired for what you’re saying.
PATSON-HANNAN: Absolutely, and that’s what the FD will be saying.
It’s not that they’re firing people for what they say.
It is what they are doing.
PATTSON-HANSAN: The city of Washington, D.C. has also recently banned firefighting from the streets and has announced plans to hire more firefighters.
The National Guard’s new role has caused some consternation within the department, which is trying to make up for the manpower cuts that have resulted from the federal government’s funding cut.PATTTON: There are some people in this department that I respect and respect.
I mean, I respect everybody that’s been here over the
