US President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his firing of FBI Director James Comey, saying he fired him “because he was being investigated for his handling of the Clinton investigation”.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Trump said he had “very good” relationship with Comey, who had “worked really hard for me”.
But he added: “I also think it’s very unfair to the president of the United States and to his family, to put him in that situation.”
He did not say whether Trump had asked Comey for his resignation.
“I don’t know if I would ask him,” Trump said.
“He’s doing a fantastic job.
But he’s a very good man.”
Comey was the lead investigator into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
The White House and Comey’s lawyer have repeatedly denied that Trump had tried to pressure him to drop the FBI investigation.
Trump fired Comey last month after a series of private phone calls with the FBI director.
The president has repeatedly questioned Comey’s integrity and the impartiality of his investigation into Russia’s election interference, and the president has denied that he ever asked Comey to end the FBI’s probe into Trump’s campaign ties to Russia.
Trump has said he fired Comey because he was not being “fair and impartial”.
